IP address FAQs
What is a public IP address?+
Your public IP is the address your internet provider assigns to your connection. Every website you visit sees it, which is how servers know where to send data back.
Why does my IP location look wrong?+
IP geolocation is an estimate based on registry and ISP data. Mobile networks, corporate VPNs and CGNAT often route traffic through a different city, so the city can be off while the country is usually right.
What is an ASN?+
An Autonomous System Number identifies the network that owns your IP range — usually your ISP or hosting provider. It is the most reliable way to identify who operates a connection.
IPv4 vs IPv6 — which am I using?+
IPv4 addresses look like 203.0.113.24; IPv6 addresses look like 2405:201:...:1a2b. If your connection supports both, this page shows whichever your browser used to reach us.
Why is my city or postal code missing?+
We merge several geolocation providers, but thin databases sometimes publish only the country for mobile, CGNAT or business ranges. When a state or postcode is unavailable from every provider it shows as a dash rather than a guess.
What is reverse DNS (PTR)?+
A PTR record maps your IP back to a hostname, usually set by your ISP — for example broadband-198-51-100-4.example.net. Blank PTR is normal on mobile and CGNAT connections.
Why is the latency test higher than a command-line ping?+
Browsers cannot send ICMP packets, so we measure a real HTTP round trip including DNS, TLS and server response time. Expect 10–50 ms more than an ICMP ping to the same host.
Can I hide my IP address?+
